The over-arching search is one of redemption, through their total immersion in Sugarland and its values. Scratch beneath the surface, and it’s about getting there by telling a white lie, gaining membership to its private society of elites by being complicit in a deception, maintaining that life by trading with the devil, and, being rewarded for it.

That is, until the past starts catching up.

This is Sugarland. We focus on the Set, the girls’ eventual admission – something that requires killing certain parts of themselves – and the tangled stories generated by it’s richly varying members, the elves that do ALL of the work and the representing shades of light and dark. Sugarland is about distracting yourself away from your problems. It’s about the quarter life crisis, reinvention, finding the right moral code, the freedom of the other side of the world, the secrets and lies that maintain it, and the past catching up with you. But mostly, it’s about a new world order of inverted values:

Bad is the new good.

Sugarland is striving for intellectual and emotional contradictions, exploring the shift in values away from the traditional system whereby good people get rewarded and bad people get punished. Bad people can do good things and not be rewarded, and good people can in fact do bad things and prosper – lie and get a glamorous new job; steal money from your dying mother and get a better life; look the other way at a car accident and gain entry into the social elite – it’s how they handle it that is the essence of Sugarland.
